Expedia Guide is an imagine feature for Expedia (Travel Booking Website) that will help different types of travelers to plan end-to-end trips. With this feature, we helps users get better experience and customize their services their own way.

Problem Discovery

Amidst the pandemic, travelers are seeking a new kind of adventure. They yearn for personalized experiences that cater to their interests and allow them to explore the world on their terms. This shift in travel behavior presents an exciting opportunity for the industry to embrace customizable travel options, foster connections with local communities, and offer niche experiences. By adapting to the changing needs of travelers, the industry can create unforgettable journeys that inspire and empower explorers to discover the world in new and exciting ways.

This feature is designed to cater to the specific needs and preferences of travelers in a post-pandemic world. It accommodates a wide range of travel styles and goes beyond just catering to needs, emphasizing the platform's role in encouraging exploration and fostering authentic experiences. The aim was to recognize and design according to the growing importance of sustainable travel practices.

Drastic Change in the behavior of Post-Pandemic Traveler

The pandemic and our own changing desires has shaped how we travel. People are more focused on safety, finding unique experiences, and having more flexibility on their trips. This means popular travel styles and destinations might not be as appealing anymore, and travelers are rethinking what matters most to them on vacation.

The pandemic highlighted the importance of personal hygiene and social distancing. Travelers may still feel a sense of unease in large groups, seeking experiences that offer more control over their environment.

Focus on Safety and Control

Confined at home for long periods, travelers crave a deeper connection with destinations. They're looking for experiences that go beyond the typical tourist traps, seeking unique and personalized itineraries that reflect their interests.

Desire for Authenticity

The shift to remote work allows for more flexibility in travel schedules. Travelers can now embrace a "workation" style, blending work with leisure in destinations that offer co-working spaces and reliable internet connectivity.

Competitor benchmarking revealed a highly competitive landscape, with multiple competitors offering nearly similar features.

What can we offer better to the users’ other than what these

competitors offer and make our users loyal to us?

After analyzing the high competitors in the market, the results have shown that all these competitors follow the same booking model and the only selling point amongst them is the discounts/ offers they offers makes the user be loyal to the product.

Does the product's redesign accord with the user's mental model?

In the Ideation stage, I had to figure out the way to incorporate these 2 features in the current website features system and flows well together. I also had to figure out user flow for Expedia Guide and to incorporate the steps to get the best results for the users.

Validating Our Assumptions

Interviewed 10+ users to validate the problem of traditional travel business models and stagnant user experiences.

The predominant finding from the interviews highlighted a stagnant user experience and absence of motivation among users regarding what they anticipate from this industry.

We conducted semi-structured interviews with target users to validate our initial findings and gain a better understanding of how people currently form habits, motivations, and challenges.

Approaching a Solution

Emphasizing progress through a visual,

personal, and reflective experience

Leveraging insights from card sorting, I sketched low-fidelity wireframes to visualize potential solutions for improved navigation and UI. Through brainstorming and iteration, I honed these ideas, ultimately selecting the most user-friendly solution. This solution was then translated into a high-fidelity prototype showcasing interactive elements like hover states and various component behaviors.

Consideration for our persona's context directed a user flow focusing on minimum steps and time.

By putting in a lot of hard work and effort, I have created a proposed version of the solution that includes aligned features for the system. These features have been thoughtfully categorized into two sections: primary and secondary. Their visual importance has been taken into account while designing the system.
