Project 2
Blackboard Learn's Redesigned Experience
Blackboard Learn
Blackboard Resign is a user-centered design project that investigated user difficulties
with Blackboard and designed solutions to improve their experience.
Tools
Figma, FigJam, Notion, Zoom
Duration
2 weeks

My Role
UX/UI Designer. Research, conceptualization, design, and prototyping.
Problem Discovery
What targeted changes can be made to Blackboard to effectively support users' learning journeys?
During early interviews with UMBC graduates, it was found that many of them struggle to use Blackboard effectively for academic purposes. Despite beginning with a clear goal in mind, they often end up quitting or struggling. This led to the question -

Menstrual Waste Disposable System aims to develop a sustainable and affordable solution for the disposal of menstrual waste. The project is focused on designing a system that is easy to use, hygienic, and environmentally friendly. This solution focusing on ways to reduce the cost of the system and to make it available in developing countries.

User faces difficulty navigating the system.
The system is not intuitive for a user to use.
Users doesn’t have a good grasp of all feature functionalities.
Why are there still gaps between the system and people in the system?
User flow
How can we ensure the chosen flow best aligns with user expectations and behaviors?
In the Ideation stage, I tackled category navigation through card sorting. This user-centered approach helped refine the information architecture. For instance, "Course Materials" found a better home under "About the Course," while a broader "Help" section emerged.
Identifying the Pain Points
Low motivation makes it difficult to even maintain sub-routines like habit tracking, much less actually doing the habits.
As an expert, I also analyze based on the six usability goals, i.e., Effectiveness, Efficiency, Utility, Safety, Learnability, and Memorability. This method helped me point out the problems that need to be worked on for this redesign.
Other key insights
I found were that...
User faces difficulty navigating the system.
The system's lack of intuitiveness poses a significant challenge for users, hindering user’s ability to navigate and utilize its features efficiently. This lack of intuitiveness can lead to frustration and inefficiencies in user workflows.
User Dissatisfaction with System's Visual Design.
User expresses dissatisfaction with the visual aesthetics of the system, finding it lacking in attractiveness and appeal. A lack of visual appeal can diminish the user's overall experience and engagement with the system, potentially impacting their motivation to interact regularly.
Users doesn’t have a good grasp of all feature functionalities.
Many users struggle with fully understanding all the functionalities offered by the system. This lack of comprehension can lead to underutilization of features and hinder users from maximizing the potential features of Blackboard.

Usability
Leveraging insights from card sorting, I sketched low-fidelity wireframes to visualize potential solutions for improved navigation and UI. Through brainstorming and iteration, I honed these ideas, ultimately selecting the most user-friendly solution. This solution was then translated into a high-fidelity prototype showcasing interactive elements like hover states and various component behaviors.
Designing an engaging user experience to encourage continued interaction with the system.
Emphasizes making navigation readily available and usable for all users.
Emphasize on designing the features for ease of use and discoverability.
Efficiently managed the redesign project and gathered solid feedback within a tight deadline.
Project Takeaway
Consideration of our persona's context directed a user flow focusing on minimum steps and time.

Despite limited time for multiple iterations, the outcome was still impressive user experience and functional dashboard.
Conducted extensive interviews with two students to gain deeper insights into the issues they faced using the system.
Identified crucial areas for improvement based on feedback and discussions.
